WHAT IS PILATES?

Continually refined for almost a century now, Pilates is a physical fitness discipline that focuses on developing core postural muscles which help keep the body balanced and provide essential support for the spine. Pilates exercises, performed on mats and specialized resistance-based apparatus, help clients achieve better posture, reduced muscular and joint pain, greater flexibility through lengthened muscles, and an overall healthier and more toned and attractive physique.

Each student works at his or her own level of capability and, with the tailored coaching of a certified Pilates trainer, progresses from tight, weak and painful muscles to flexibility, length and strength. Correct breathing, centering, concentration, control and precision are fundamental to each exercise. With time, Pilates basics become second nature, and carry over into everyday life, translating to grace and economy of movement. All levels welcome!

WHAT IS YOGA?

There are several different styles of yoga. Our program is rooted in the vinyasa style yoga practice; however, other forms of yoga may be introduced to classes from time to time. Students progress through a continuous flow of yoga postures linked together by the breath, emphasizing proper alignment in each pose. Participants will be introduced to a different mix of poses in each practice—as well as intermediate and advanced poses. Students will build heat, flexibility, endurance and strength. Fun for all levels from beginners to advanced students!

"I've done everything from cardio machines to classes and weights, and there's nothing like Pilates in my book. For years, I would toss and turn at night due to joint pain in my left hip and knee. Once I got into a Pilates routine, the pain completely disappeared. Working out with a stretch -- combining core strength and muscle length made all the difference for me. There's no other workout that brings me such perfect results."
- G. McCabe, OTAC Pilates Student.
